
CPS Investigation Tech
Rutherford County DSS, NC – Fulltime Position
Work and live in the beautiful foothills of Western North Carolina while taking the first step in your investigative or forensic career. In this role you will support your lead investigator as they follow through on screened in allegations of child maltreatment. Together you will work as an investigative unit. Your focus will be to make sure all documentation is handled, that you take good field notes, assist with conducting interviews, and running background checks.
Job Responsibilities
the Social Work Technician is an entry level position that the investigative unit utilizes to support the day-to-day work of the fully certified CPS Social Worker. This position has the unique advantage to partner with the CPS Investigator/Assessor, go out into the field, observe, and take notes of interviews the CPS social worker conducts with all parties in the CPS case. The Social Work Technician will document the observations, photograph the home and parties when required, maintain the case record, call collateral contacts, request any records pertinent to support the case, and any other direct support for the CPS Social Worker. This position will be located in the CPS Unit and serve as a valuable team member by attending case staffing, team meetings, and trainings to assist in acquiring knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to support the CPS Social Worker and team.
Work Schedule
The Social Work Technician will report to work Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5pm. Child Protection work often requires flexibility in scheduling, and the goal is for this position to mirror the schedule of the fully certified CPS Social Worker to maximize the support of day-to-day executive functions.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position is responsible for building and managing the CPS Social Worker’s case file for each case assigned to the dyad team. This includes but is not limited to, maintaining an organized and complete file with a copy of the Intake form, active 5027 to open services, criminal/civil/RIL background checks, chronologically maintaining the narrative and supporting documents such as photographs using the NCDSS CPS 5010, and other executive office management functions to ensure the CPS record is created and maintained according NC CPS Policy standards.

Shadowing the CPS Social Worker on home and community visits to provide observation and document the CPS Social Worker’s interactions with parties in the CPS case. Documentation will be added to the CPS case file within 7 days of the contact – best practice is within 24 hours of a provided contact to ensure fidelity of the information for the case.

Conduct collateral contacts as identified in the investigative/assessment process. This position will call or conduct a face-to-face meeting with all collaterals to gather information pertinent to the CPS case, staff with the CPS Social Worker, and document the information in the CPS case record.

This position will attend staffing with the CPS Social Worker and CPS Social Work Supervisor per NC DSS CPS policy, attend team staffing as scheduled, and other necessary meetings such as a multidisciplinary team or community child protection team meeting to provide input for the case decisions to ensure the case record is maintained accurately. This person will also review NC DSS Child CPS policy and law and aid in analysis and interpretation that aligns with the NC and local DSS rules of service provision to ensure the case meets state and local standards for quality.

Attend any and all required trainings to build and acquire a strong working knowledge of Child Protection work per policy and law that will improve the executive support of the CPS Social Worker.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Work involves researching, interpreting, and analyzing a variety of policies, procedures, and regulations in order to select the most appropriate course of action within specific procedural and operational guidelines. Work requires the completion of administrative activities that require a knowledge of programmatic and procedural requirements of the work and an awareness of the specific functions and staff assignments within the organization.
Work requires considerable knowledge of the programs and activities of the organization, the goals, priorities, policies, and commitments of the manager and the operational structure. Work also requires a significant knowledge of other internal and external organizational segments with which activities must be interfaced.
Considerable knowledge of office management practices, techniques and technology; considerable knowledge and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and language uses to compose a variety of written materials; knowledge of office management practices; skill in practicing effective communication techniques, both orally and in writing; skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, officials, and the general public; skill in planning, prioritizing and organizing office work flow and procedures; ability to perform, manage, and coordinate a volume of administrative tasks; ability to research, interpret and analyze applicable program data and make appropriate decisions; ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural guidelines for problem resolution and/or information purposes.
Required Training
Graduation from high school and four years of progressively responsible administrative/office management experience; or completion of a two-year criminal justice or human services program and two years of experience as described above; or graduation from a four-year college or university, preferably with major emphasis on social work or related field with demonstrable skills in the assigned area; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
